Instructional Rounds

LUSD is in its sixth year of implementation of instructional rounds based on the book Instructional Rounds in Education A Network Approach to Improving Teaching and Learning, by Elizabeth A. City, Richard F. Elmore, Sarah E. Fiarman, and Lee Teitel, foreword by Andrew Lachman.

                                

The concept was inspired by the medical-rounds model used by doctors to discuss patient diagnosis and treatment. This is the same concept used in education with teaching and student learning. This is a process in which educators make observations of teaching and student learning in the classroom that leads to discussion, analysis of observations, and next steps. There is a strong commitment to this process by the District Leadership Team, Site Leadership Teams, and staff. Furthermore, the Superintendent is an active member of the California Rural Network of Instructional Rounds in which principals participate in Principals in Action, and with their site leadership teams in Leadership in Action. Each site staff participates in at least 4 Instructional Rounds a year.
